The Fire Department provides all risk emergency services, as well as public education programs, fire prevention, and life safety measures to the City's residents. These services support the Fire Department's mission of effectively preserving lives and protecting property. The department provides Emergency Services, which include pre-hospital emergency medical services at the Emergency Medical Technician I (EMT-1) level; response to structural, vehicular and vegetation fires, hazardous materials response, water rescue, trench rescue, public assistance and other emergencies. The department also administers a hazardous materials business plan program in cooperation with Santa Barbara County.

Description Of Responsibilities

The Fire Chief is responsible for policy and general direction for the Fire Department; provides administrative support for senior fire management staff, and actively participates as a member of the City management team. The Chief represents the City regarding fire and life safety issues on a regional and statewide basis. Additionally, the Chiefs' office provides financial oversight, advanced planning, intra agency coordination, and deals with issues of Community concern.

Mission Statement

The principal mission of the Santa Maria Fire Department is the preservation of life and the protection of property within the City of Santa Maria. Our services will be delivered in the most efficient, cost-effective, and professional manner possible.

2022-23 Goals and Objectives

  1. Hire and train staff to achieve Prevention Division’s responsibilities, including inspections, plan reviews, and investigations capabilities.

     

  2. Initiate design of the Santa Maria Fire Department Training Center with a business plan development and evaluate site selection.

     

  3. Assess current, and justify future, Fire Department facility strategic locations – Analyze current and future growth trends and work collaboratively with Planning, City Manager’s Office, and other Departments to ensure Fire Services can be effectively delivered as the City grows and expands.

     

  4. Develop tools to measure impact of new development on the Fire Department workload and service levels. Establish benchmarks and relevant measures of growth.

     

  5. Identify and implement requirements for EOC activation – Identify resources, personnel, and infrastructure to ensure continuity of operations.

     

  6. Develop a Pre-Incident planning program that provides field crews with effective display of relevant information for emergency and non-emergency response.

     

  7. Reinstitute third-grade school fire safety program with the field crews.

     

  8. Deliver LISTOS and CERT courses to the community with the goal of increased enrollment and more established community outreach and education.

     

  9. Assess the needs for career advancement and develop a clear path forward for succession planning. Ensure task books, job descriptions and educational support are in alignment for effective progress within the department.

     

  10. Implement an aerial fireworks enforcement plan to reduce the overall usage of illegal fireworks.
